iPad the Apple Tablet PC that created and set the standard for all tablet PCs
Apple tablet pc the iPad builds on the enormous success of the Apple iPhone. Apple Inc., is a global brand name giant, not only because of the success of the Apple iPad but also other products such as the iPod, iPhone and their computer hardware and software.
Many people do not comprehend just how big this company is. Within these markets, Apple generates revenue that is higher than the revenue of Microsoft, or half of the gross domestic product of New Zealand. Their net profit is in the vicinity of IBM.
In 2010, Apple released their most market influential product to date, the iPad. It is a tablet pc that combines all that is cool and fun into one simple but very elaborate device. The iPad is not the first device that can be labeled tablet pc, but is the first Apple tablet pc and it has everything that makes an Apple product stand out, sleek design, posh feel, debonair look, innovative technology and is sizzling cool.
The first iPad, got released in April of 2010, due to the great PR campaign and pre-orders all units were sold out almost immediately. The initial model was the iPad Wi-Fi, with storage capacities of 16, 32 and 64 GB.
In less than a month the Apple tablet pc range was expanded to include an iPad Wi-Fi + 3G model, with the same storage capacities. The original iPad did not have a camera, but the Apple tablet pc device did have 256 MB RAM on an Apple A4 1GHz chip, it had Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and the 9.7 inch multi-touch display had a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels on a scratch resistant surface.
Despite the enormous success and demand for the iPad, by March 2011 were almost 20 million units sold, Apple decided to upgrade the device and offer an improved Apple tablet pc model, the iPad 2.
The improvements did include a thinner and more compact design; a 720 p camera was added on the back and a 0.3 megapixel camera on the front for video conferencing. In this Apple tablet pc the processor is an Apple A5, dual-core, also on 1GHz, the RAM was doubled to 512 MB.
Storage capacity also remained the same with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB, models offered included Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi with 3G. To the sensors which already existed in the previous model, the magnetometer, ambient light sensor and accelerometer, a gyroscope was added.
What many people do not realize is that the main camera of this Apple tablet pc is only 0.7 megapixels, which is capable of only delivering very low quality photos. There is also no flash. One of the must have upgrades in the iPad 3 are the cameras. I am sure Apple won’t disappoint.
It is also interesting to note that both CPUs of these Apple tablet pc devices are manufactured by Samsung, despite the lawsuits that Apple and Samsung have running against each other.
Recently Apple even managed to stop the sells of their new tablet PC Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe. That ban has since been lifted.
The 64 GB chips are also from Samsung, RAM comes from Toshiba, display is an LG, touch panels Wintek, touch-screen chips are Broadcom.
It seems that most of the hardware, if not all, comes from outside Apple. Sony, which was responsible for the cameras, promised HD quality and much higher resolution for the forthcoming iPad 3.
There is no information available if the next iPad will feature the same Apple A5, or maybe A6 quad-core processor, or if Apple will risk the transition to the more powerful and very popular nVidia Tegra 3 processor, which has been unveiled just recently.
The new iPad 3
Keeping with the established release schedule, in March 2012 Apple announced and released the new iPad, without any of the expected surnames like “3” or the speculated “HD”. At first glance it seemed that Apple listened to consumers’ suggestions and added the much hoped for retina display with a stunning 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution at 264 pixel per inch; a much better camera, which is capable of recording HD video at 1080p at up to 30 frames per second and photographs at a 5 megapixel resolution; a longer lasting battery that allows up to 10 hours of uninterrupted fun and connectivity improvements including 4G LTE and Bluetooth 4.0.
Unfortunately, it seems that Apple failed to extend the glossy exterior improvements to the interior as well, keeping the tact frequency of the improved A5X processor at 1GHz, also remaining at dual-core processing (which, despite the quad-core graphics, is below expected and established standards by the competition); furthermore remaining at only 1GB RAM; omitting to include storage expansion facilities, such as micro-SD; neglecting to add the much expected Siri, but also LED flash to the camera; and avoiding to provide a new iOS version with the new iPad device.
Customer reports soon after release testify of further downsides, such as increased weight due to the larger battery, weaker Wi-Fi connectivity, overheating, size of applications increase due to higher resolution of retina display and increased fragility.
It goes without saying that there are barely any apps that use the extreme display resolution capability of the retina display, so being ahead of time is sometimes a very lonely spot. An additional curiosity is that FaceTime seems not to be working with 4G LTE, only with Wi-Fi.
Despite all the negative publicity, first two batches of the new iPad were sold out even before they reached the stores. Just a few days ago, Apple officials released a statement announcing the sale of three million new iPad units after only four days of in-store availability, with increasing worldwide demand. Despite all the inferior features, which have been much better presented in other tablet pc devices by competing manufacturers, like the Motorola Tablet PC Xoom with a 5 megapixel camera, or the true color display of theAsus Tablet PC the Eee Pad Transformer, Apple tablet pc devices will manage to generate overall sales for this year that could range around 40 million devices.
People simply love the iPad, it gives them exactly what they are looking for, the operating system is not demanding, it is fun, easy to use, geared towards total entertainment and comes already pre-loaded with all necessary widgets.
For additional content there are free and commercial programs and media content available at iTunes, the Apple App Store, MobileMe, Safari, Game Center, iBookstore and the Photo Booth.
The featured multitude of offered additional stuff for the iPad is simply mind boggling. Just simply browsing through all the stores takes days and there is still new content to be found.
